Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 to 1.25 pounds flank steak (sliced into thin strips, no more than 1/4-inch thick)
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil (divided)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil (divided)
  • 4 cloves garlic (pressed or finely minced)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons ginger (or to taste; fresh or dried is okay)
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup dark brown sugar (packed; light may be substituted)
  • 4 to 6 cups broccoli florets (dependent on preference for broccoli)
  • 2 to 3 green onions (sliced into 1/4-inch long segments)
  • Red pepper flakes (to taste)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnishing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef: To a large ziptop bag, add the sliced flank steak and cornstarch. Seal the bag and toss gently until all pieces are coated. Set aside while you prepare the sauce.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger; sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant but not burnt. Next, pour in the soy sauce and water, followed by brown sugar. Stir until dissolved, then bring to a boil. Let it boil for about 2 to 3 minutes before reducing heat to low. Simmer for around 5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  3. Sear the Beef: In a large skillet, add the remaining olive oil and sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the coated steak strips and cook until browned and cooked through—about 5 to 7 minutes—flipping occasionally for even cooking.
  4. Add Broccoli: Once the beef is cooked through, add in your broccoli florets directly into the skillet.
  5. Combine with Sauce: Carefully drizzle in your prepared soy sauce mixture over the beef and broccoli. Expect it to bubble up as you toss everything together until evenly coated. Continue cooking for an additional 3-5 minutes at medium-high heat until broccoli reaches your desired tenderness.
  6. Thicken if Necessary: If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with one tablespoon of water in a small bowl to create a slurry. Add it to your skillet while stirring constantly until thickened.
  7. Final Touches: Turn off heat and fold in sliced green onions.
  8. Serve: Optionally sprinkle with red pepper flakes or sesame seeds before serving hot over rice or noodles.
